12 Small Changes for a Happier, Healthier Life

Life is one big classroom. I learn something new everyday and something from everyone I meet. These are guidelines that I try to incorporate into my life everyday, as difficult as it may be sometimes.

  1. Give compliments more often, but be genuine. Being able to compliment someone else will not only put a smile on someone else’s face, but it will also show how secure you are with yourself. But the key is being real, because people can see right past fake compliments.
  2. Spend time with loved ones. At the end of the day, it’s the memories and moments you create with your family and friends that matter the most. Material things come and go, but time with family and friends is priceless.
  3. Respect others and practice gratitude. No one is beneath you and no one is above you—we were all created equal in value. Everyone deserves respect. You don’t have to like everyone you meet, but instead of putting someone down, just keep your distance and don’t say anything at all. And say thank you more often.
  4. Be positive and try to drown out negativity. Both are contagious, so be careful. Be cognizant of the people you are around.
  5. Give unconditionally. Having high expectations when you do something for someone is one of the biggest reasons for disappointment. Just because you do something nice for someone, don’t expect it back, otherwise you’re likely to be largely disappointed. With that said, be smart about it and be cognizant about when it turns into a one-sided relationship.
  6. Read often. Learning new information and creating new connections in the brain are the best ways to keep your mind active.
  7. Stay active. Exercising has more health benefits than we realize. Not only does it help us feel better about ourselves, but it also prevents illnesses, releases endorphins, and makes us look better.
  8. Step outside of your comfort zone and be open to the unknown. Always have an open mind; you never know what you may discover. Just because something is different, doesn’t mean it’s wrong.
  9. Embrace change. Nothing is forever—friendships, careers, relationships, life, etc. Constantly assess the value that people, jobs, things, etc. bring into your life.
  10. Smile more. There is no reason to wear a frown or to take life too seriously. Smiling randomly at someone can make someone’s day, and you may never know it.
  11. Do a random act of kindness. Actions speak louder than words and a small gesture can go a long way.
  12. Trust your intuition.
